Glass Show: Martin Janecký a Emil Kováč
As part of (Glass) Makers’ Day and the celebrations of the UNESCO International Day for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage, organized by the Museum of Glass and Bijouterie in Jablonec nad Nisou, Nový Bor will become the stage for an exceptional GLASS SHOW, where two personalities of contemporary glassmaking will demonstrate their art.
Martin Janecký
A Czech glass artist who has become a worldwide phenomenon. At the age of only 13 he began working in his father’s glassworks and gradually rose to the very top. After studying at Pilchuck Glass School in the USA under Richard Royal and William Morris, he also came to be in demand as a teacher-lecturer. He has been artist-in-residence in many glass programs, for example at the Corning Museum of Glass Studio, at the Pilchuck glass school, the Penland School of Crafts, or the University in Tōyama. He became famous for the technique called inside bubble sculpting – sculpting a sculpture from within a hot bubble. Today Martin Janecký is considered one of the best glass sculptors in the world, and his works are exhibited in galleries and museums around the globe. In 2019 he founded his own studio on Kampa in Prague – Janecký Studio.
Emil Kováč
A master glassmaker with international experience and an unmistakable signature style. After studying in Nový Bor, he worked in Czech glassworks as well as in studios abroad. He works as an independent glassmaker for the Czech glass industry and for ateliers around the world. He participated in founding several community glass studios in South Africa and taught basic design at the Technicum University in Pretoria, South Africa. His work shows African influences, as well as an effort to combine them with techniques he has mastered over the years. His creations balance the colorful and temperamental character of Africa with the typical qualities of Czech glass design. Emil Kováč creates strong, expressive objects which have gained recognition at home and abroad.
