THE GLASS STATIONS OF THE CROSS OF RECONCILIATION
A new Way of the Cross of Reconciliation has been officially opened in Příchovice; it runs from the centre of the village towards the Štěpánka lookout tower. This exceptional project was created as part of the Year of Reconciliation, proclaimed by the Diocese of Litoměřice, and its opening took place in the presence of Stanislav Přibyl, Archbishop of Prague.
However, this is not merely a new tourist attraction in the heart of the Jizera Mountains. The Way of the Cross commemorates the complex history of this region, where Czechs and Germans lived side by side for centuries. Their coexistence brought periods of cooperation and mutual enrichment, but also painful events linked to the war and post-war changes. The new Way of the Cross aims to be a symbol of understanding, dialogue and hope.
The route features fifteen stations, fourteen of which consist of glass scenes created by master engraver Jan Schindler based on designs by illustrator Ilona Polanski. Traditional glass engraving takes on a new dimension here, linking a spiritual message with the rich glassmaking tradition of the Jizera Mountains. The individual stations are accompanied by texts encouraging visitors to reflect on forgiveness, responsibility and human relationships.
The project was initiated by Stanislav Pelc, Vlastimil Plecháč and the parish priest Jiří Smolka. A number of craftspeople, artists, volunteers and supporters were involved in its realisation, working together to create a work of profound spiritual and cultural significance.
The Way of the Cross of Reconciliation offers visitors not only beautiful views of the Jizera Mountains and the path to the iconic Štěpánka lookout tower, but above all a space to pause, find tranquillity and reflect. It is further proof that glass can tell powerful stories and connect the past with the present.
